The Ariake Chair is designed by Gabriel Tan for the Japanese furniture brand Ariake. Part of a cohesive family that includes an armchair and bench, the chair is made through a considered harmony of hand craftsmanship and advanced machining. Its form draws on both classical and contemporary joinery details — a dialogue between tradition and precision that is central to Ariake’s design philosophy. This version is fitted with a leather seat cushion, offering a softer, more upholstered feel while retaining the refined material character of the collection.
Ariake is a Japanese furniture brand rooted in the craft traditions of the Ariake region of Kyushu. The brand collaborates with international designers to create furniture that bridges Japanese material culture and contemporary European design sensibility. Each piece is made with deep respect for natural materials, traditional techniques, and the slow, considered process of making.

We find a certain attractive calmness surrounding objects that are in a momentary state of balance. The solid wood legs and table top tapers from a thickness of 20mm to 5mm, giving a sense of incredible visual lightness. This is emphasized by the small gap at the base, lifting the table off the floor and letting a sliver of light through.
