The Milan–Brussels architecture studio Piovenefabi paid tribute to the Milan metro in 2017 with a much-discussed show at the Chicago Architecture Biennial. Its highlight was a floor lamp that reproduces the metro’s iconic handrail. With Metro Lamps, valerie_objects transforms the gallery piece into a full lighting collection with playful variants. The floor lamp, originally designed in iconic red, is now also available in three additional colours referencing the Milan metro. Piovenefabi also deconstructed the original lamp into its basic forms and reassembled them into three playful table lamps and a pendant lamp.

Each lamp base begins as a knot-free block of solid timber, carefully machined to accommodate and conceal electrical components. Every shade is made from high-quality pine veneer purposefully cut to reveal a lively and characterful grain. The 1002 Hans Pendant Light XL is Vaarnii's super-sized re-engineering of Hans-Agne Jakobsson's iconic 1960s design. After re-engineering the original Hans pendants, Vaarnii understood that the design's innovative lightweight construction could be extended even further. The 1002 XL uses the same concentric circles of veneer and sophisticated interior structure of solid Finnish pine as its smaller siblings — but tests the limits of lighting manufacture with its scale. At 70 cm wide, it brings maximum impact to interior spaces with its brutal scale and metres of finest pine veneer. More softly filtered light, more pine surface, more imposing.
